Feralis DAT Bio Notes - A Great Free Resource to study for DAT Biology Feralis DAT Bio Notes is a comprehensive collection of notes compiled by the Student Doctor Network member FeralisExtrenum. It is a very comprehensive collection of notes that has been used by many test takers who have scored very well in DAT Bio. As Mightymoose02 from the SDN DAT forums put it, the notes are "Basically an encyclopedia for DAT Biology." Feralis DAT Bio Notes were compiled from the bio sections of the Kaplan Blue Book, and Barron's, and Cliff's AP Bio 3rd edition. Very helpful linking was also added to these notes. As Feralis explained in one of his SDN posts, " If you click the link for those topics within the notes (hold down the Ctrl button if you are using MS Word), it will jump you to the related image at the end of the document. Holding Ctrl + clicking the image itself will jump you back to the spot you were at in the notes." The bolded red text in the notes is mostly for his own use to mark material that he needed to brush up on, but a lot of it is also new material he added to the first version. Below is a link to the second version of the notes. Click to download Feralis Extrenum's Biology Notes EDIT 7/23/15: As of late, the free PDF of Cliff's AP Bio is no longer available. Use Cliff's AP Biology 3rd Edition for Free to Prepare for the DAT Bio IMPORTANT NOTEWhen preparing for the DAT Bio, many people suggest to use Cliff's AP Biology Book but not what edition. Currently there are 4 editions available, and while newer editions usually are better, such is not the case when studying for the Dental Admissions Test. The most recent FOURTH edition has been updated and tailored to the Advanced Placement Test and thus is not as helpful as it's predecessor, the THIRD edition. Many test takers love the book because it covers a wide array of topics in a concise manner, similar to what will be asked on the DAT Bio, GENERAL questions over a broad spectrum of subject areas. As Steven Willard recounts in his Amazon.com review of the book: "Great summary for Biology. I'm an accountant going back for dental. This book was a great summary of biology topics. It has plenty of practice tests with good examples. If you can do everything in this book, you probably don't need college biology 1&2.I try to save money w/ test prep by studying free off of websites and out of my old book. This is the best, most succinct resource I've found for preparation for a test (I'm sure also great for MCAT, AP, CLEP, etc). One regret: not getting AP Org Chem (didn't have as many reviews, but in hindsight I would have bought it). Also check out Cliffs AP Chemistry...just as good." The DAT Destroyer authored by Dr. Jim Romano is a must have for anyone preparing for the DAT. It is an invaluable tool and will help solidify your knowledge in the sciences. It offers hundreds of practice problems in Biology, General and Organic Chemistry, and Quantitative Reasoning. The questions are known to be very difficult, and it is often discouraging for many who go through it for the first time feeling as if they know nothing, but FEAR NOT! If you press on and learn the concepts behind these questions, you WILL PERFORM WELL on the DAT. The questions are all multiple choice, just like the real DAT. To make most efficient use of the DAT Destroyer, it is essential that you understand why an answer is the the answer and why the other answers are wrong. The detailed explanations Dr. Romano offers in the solutions section of the book will help greatly with this. MAKE SURE you learn all of them! For those of you that are rusty in the sciences, I highly recommend that you brush up on your concepts with other books like Cliffs AP Bio. or the Kaplan Blue Book, as going through the DAT Destroyer without a decent grasp of science concepts can be very de-motivating. But as stated earlier, if you persevere and learn the concepts in this book, you will be rewarded with very high science scores (20+ for most). Finally, if you are feeling stumped and need live support, Dr. Romano lists his number for direct 1 on 1 support! He really stands behind his product and so do many others that have successfully Destroyed the DAT! You can get it at Brand New or used at a great price at eBay.
DAT Biology Below is a list of topics that are covered on the DAT Biology test, as listed by the ADA on the DAT portion of their website: http://www.ada.org/dat.aspx The scope of the test covers a wide range of topics, but the questions are not as in depth as one might see in a class devoted to a specific topic like Ecology. Major Biology Topics to Know for the DAT Cell and Molecular Biology Origin of life Cell metabolism (including photosynthesis/enzymology) Cellular processes Thermodynamics Organelle structure and function Mitosis/meiosis Cell structure Experimental cell biology Diversity of Life Biological Organization and Relationship of Major Taxa (Six-Kingdom, Three-Domain System) – plantae, animalia, protista, fungi, eubacteria (bacteria), archae, etc. Structure and Function of Systems Integumentary Skeletal muscular Circulatory Immunological Digestive Respiratory Urinary Nervous/senses Endocrine Reproductive Developmental Biology Fertilization Descriptive embryology Developmental mechanisms Experimental embryology Genetics Molecular genetics, Human genetics Classical genetics Chromosomal genetics Genetic technology Evolution, Ecology, and Behavior Natural selection Population genetics/speciation Cladistics Population and community ecology Ecosystems Animal behavior (including social behavior) Two great test prep materials that I highly recommend using for preparing for this section and brushing up on your Biology are: Cliffs AP Bio Book and Kaplan's Blue Book. Kaplan's Blue Book has material for each and every section on the DAT. It is a great resource to refresh yourself with the general concepts of many of the topics tested on the DAT. However, I would not recommend using only KBB to prepare, as it does not everything. As I was preparing for my test, I read many good recommendations about the Cliff's AP Biology Prep Book. It is not super in depth, but it does cover a very wide array of topics. Also it's very easy on your wallet! You can sometimes find a great deal on these books used at eBay or half.com, but I often find that Amazon has the cheapest prices, used or new. Buying both of these books NEW will probably cost around $55-60, including shipping. Not a bad investment to improve your DAT score!
